Some Things Just Fall in Your Lap

One of my most loyal clients came to the studio today with Jordan who is now six months old. It seems like just yesterday when his mom posed for some great maternity portraits! And it's hard to believe he is now smiling, sitting, rolling and crawling. This is my favorite age for children's sessions. Give him six more months and he will be running through with me calmly holding the light stands as he passes!

His mother, Cheryl, is all about fairness and brought a tub and props similar to those used for big brother Hayden when he was the same age. Same.... but different...

But while the plan was to photograph this wonderfully round little boy with his tubby toys and produce a compatible picture to those taken of Hayden it was impossible for the artist in me to ignore the unmistakable opportunity that appeared when mom brought the items out of her bag!

So I Bought My Own Ball

If you read the post before this one (see below) then you will understand why. And it's my ball! It may not be used for basketball, practice, or any other non-studio use! I repeat... it's MY ball. If you know my boys you will understand that too. I have many ideas for how to use this prop with many age groups and look forward to trying them out starting with my own middle school player. Well, perhaps looking forward to working with Luc in the studio is a bit of an exaggeration :o) While he is handsome, tall and lean, he is not entirely comfortable posing. But me and my ball will give it a try. It can only get better from here!

The Best Laid Plans

Being prepared and organized keeps me sane in almost every aspect of my life. Today, for instance, my friend's daughter was coming to the studio to have formal portraits done in her basketball uniform. It was a great season for the Stanley Blue Devil Middle School Team! A near win in the finals is exciting at any age but especially for that first year on a middle school team. It was therefore important to me to capture this moment in her life (as with many others in her lifetime!) with pictures that were as special as the season. After much thought and internet research I was ready with some ideas that would be fantastic. "Where's your ball Beth?" I say.

"Oh Oh", says she.

... insert the screeching sound of a record player needle across an album here...

So much for prepared! But in the ever-changing, fast paced world of photography it is essential to be able to roll with the punches, adapt quickly, and pull off the perfect picture while appearing in control. Have a look at these and those posted below.
